Architecture introduction

SOM Architectural Design Firm, KPF Architectural Firm and Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Group and others have submitted their design schemes. Then American Gensler Architectural Design Firm’s “Dragon” scheme and Foster Architectural Firm’s “Spike” scheme are included. Building entirety

Like the most of modern super high-rise skyscrapers. Shanghai Tower is not just an office building. Each of the nine division of Shanghai Tower has its own air hall and atrium, sandwiched between the inside and outside glass walls. Area 1 will be a retail area, area 2 to area 6 will be an office area, and hotels and viewing platforms will be located in areas 7 to 9.

Foundation

Pudong, Shanghai, is located in an alluvial deposit. The center of Shanghai is located in a river delta. The soil is soft and contains a lot of clay. Before erecting the steel beam, the engineers punched 980 piles at a depth of 282 feet (86 meters), then poured 2.15 million cubic feet (60,881 cubic meters) of concrete to reinforce them, forming a 20-foot (6 meters) thick foundation floor.

Roof

Seen from the roof of the building, the shape of Shanghai Tower is like a guitar dial. With the increase of height, each floor is twisted nearly one degree. This design can slow down the wind flow. When the wind surrounds the building, it will form a vortex shedding effect, which will cause the skyscraper to sway violently. Wind tunnel tests on scaled-down models show that this shape design can reduce lateral forces by 24%, which is critical for typhoon-tested buildings in Shanghai.
